Established in 1981, Keel Row Books is one of the leading antiquarian and second-hand bookshops in the North of England.
We have a real passion for books and can offer expert guidance on buying, selling, and appraising books, maps, prints and ephemera.
We believe in the cultural importance of books and the enduring values they embody.
Meet the Staff
Anthony and Alice have owned Keel Row Books since 2006. As well as running the shop, they direct and organise the York Antiquarian Book Seminar (or YABS for short), a not-for-profit educational programme for would-be booksellers.
Anthony has been a bookseller for over 25 years and is a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association (ABA), the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) and the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association (PBFA). As well as organising YABS, he’s also a faculty member on the course. In 2014 he was elecetd to the Council of the ABA where he served for three years.
Anthony has a keen interest in the heritage and culture of the North East, especially the work of Thomas Bewick and Joseph Crawhall and is a committee member of the Bewick Society.
Alice has managed the Keel Row shop since 2009, after a decade of work in the design and architecture industry, both in the UK and overseas. She has a special interest in Irish & American literature.
Averil worked at Hencotes Books in Hexham for many years before coming to join the team at Keel Row Books. She’s an English history buff, a member of the Richard III Society and loves traditional English customs and festivals. Apparently she has a ten year plan of events to visit!
Brian was a long-standing customer of Keel Row Books before he became a staff member. He is a children’s book enthusiast and the author of several local history titles, including 'Postcards from Cramlington', 'Cramlington Parkside School Remembered' and 'The Tyne Training Ship Wellesley Remembered'.
Pat is the newest member of the Keel Row team having joined us after several years as the Volunteer Deputy Manager of a busy Oxfam bookshop. A large proportion of her time is spent working on our online shop. Her book interests are wide-ranging but she has a particular interest in mountaineering and walking books and enjoys reading crime fiction.
