Translated from the German by Philip Owens. Novel set in Berlin in the years around the Great War, following the fortunes of the family of Gustav Hackendahl. Fallada’s previous work ‘Wolf unter Wölfen’ (Wolf Among Wolves) was a commercial success and was perceived by the Nazi’s as a critique of the Weimer Republic; Goebbles called it ‘a super book’. Unfortunately this unwanted attention led to Goebbles commissioning Fallada to write an account of the hardships in Germany brought on by the consequences of WWI. Rewritten by Fallada a number of times to appease Goebbels ‘Iron Gustav’ was the result.
