FIRST EDITION GIFT INSCRIBED by the author. Octavo, pp. xv, [3], 386. 2 line maps showing northern coalfields. Publisher’s black cloth with gilt titles to spine in an orange, pictorial dust-jacket. Boards a little bruised and rubbed at corners and spine tips, with single crease to spine. Gift inscription in brown ink to ffep. Jacket is sunned to spine and has areas of loss to corners and spine tips. Very Good book in Good jacket.
 
Gift inscribed by the author to Bill Lancaster; Colls and Lancaster collaborated in several local history publications since. The Northumberland and Durham coalfield was the largest and most important in the world, fuelling much of the Industrial Revolution. Chronicled here is the history of associated mining communities during the years of peak production and change.
