FIRST EDITION. Tall octavo, pp. xii, 291. Fold-out frontispiece and 19 fold-out plates to rear (of 20). Black quarter calf with gilt titles and ruling to spine and purple moire boards. Primrose yellow endpapers. Boards bumped with wear to corners and stained & toned. From the library of Sir Elkanah Armitage, industrialist and Liberal politician, with his name and address inscribed to ffep dated 1849, the year of publication. Endpapers lightly soiled & creased otherwise contents clean. Lacks Plate IX; several plates a little mis-folded with associated nicks & creases to edge; minor foxing to plates. Overall a Very Good copy.
 
Detailed account of the building of the Chester and Holyhead railway bridges at Conway and the Menai Straits, designed by Robert Stephenson with the Author’s assistance; the bridges enabled trains to carry passengers direct from London to the port at Holyhead. Sir Elkanah Armitage (1794-1876) was a highly sucessful textiles manufacturer, industrialist and Liberal politician for Lancashire. Rare.
