FIRST THUS. Octavo, pp. xx, [2], 417. 72 illustrations by Francis Cleyn engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar and Pierre Lambert. Green quarter calf with gilt titles to spine and pictorial green cloth-covered boards; top edge stained green; green map endpapers. Housed in green paper-covered slipcase with gilt decoration. Clean and bright with no annotation or inscriptions; very minor soiling and shelf wear to slipcase. A Near Fine copy in like slipcase.
 
The Dryden translation of Virgil’s Aeneid was first published in 1697, with engravings by Hollar and Lambert which had originally been used for John Ogilby’s translation of 1654; this edition uses the 1892 revised and corrected Dryden text of George Saintsbury, and the editions from the 1697 first Dryden translation. Heavyweight, so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
