Tinted lithographed frontispiece with tissue guard of The Weisshorn, From Above Randa from a drawing by Edward Whymper, engraved dedication page, 7 further colour lithographic plates and 4 maps as called for. Publishers’ reeded hyacinth blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine and decorative floral border in blind to boards. Brown endpapers with publishers’ catalogue to pastedowns. Cover cloth lightly surface soiled with minor wear at spine tips. A little marginal annotation in pencil but no inscriptions; single tissue guard and plate a little foxed, affecting margin only, otherwise contents clean and bright. A Very Good copy. The Author’s first book - an Alpine classic by Jane Quentin Freshfield (1814- 1901), pioneering female mountaineer and one of the first British women to explore the Alps. Family holidays in the area also inspired her son Douglas, who became President of the Alpine Club and editor of the Alpine Journal. Contents include vivid descriptions of adventures in the Gries and Albrun passes, the Mettelhorn and locations in the higher Swiss Alps. Rare. £600.00
