12 mo; unpaginated. Bound in contemporary Etruscan calf with a fore-edge painting by Edwards of Halifax. Six decorative compartments to spine, tooled in gilt; outer Greek key design in gilt to boards,enclosing palmeate border in blind and central panel surrounded by gilt border. Aeg; marbled endpapers. Lacks title label.; spine cracked with minor loss to tips. Boards lightly scuffed with wear to corners. Gift inscription to first blank dated 1816 above ownership inscription dated 1847; a little scattered light foxing otherwise contents clean and crisp.
Thomas Edwards of Halifax is well known for his fine bindings and his 1815 Catalogue of books for sale offered this title in a choice of red or blue morocco for 12 shillings, or “superb in Etruscan calf, gilt leaves, with a drawing thereon” for the weighty sum of £1 11s 6d. The same catalogue also states that prices are “marked in the first leaf of every Book” as is the case here. The fine fore-edge painting is a pastoral scene of Coghill Hall near Knaresborough, Yorkshire, with added interest from a pair of pedestrians and a grazing cow in the foreground. The scene is copied from an engraving in The Seats of the Nobility and Gentry (1787).
