Creases from folding; light surface soiling and small chip to right edge (affecting margin only, not border or text). A Very Good copy.
Verse in 21 rhyming quatrains. An account of the Ferndale disaster of 1867, in which 178 men and boys died in a double explosion caused by fire-damp; this was one of the major disasters in Welsh mining history, and the inquest concluded that it had been caused by an accumulation of gases owing to the prevailing weather conditions, combined with the careless use of uncovered lamps in a safety breach that proved fatal. Sadly it took another explosion only 18 months later in the same pit for recommendations to be put into practice for compulsory safety inspections to be carried out every 3 months in all collieries and for all colliery officials to sit mining examinations.
