Detailed examination of the mining industry, with particular reference to the many disasters caused by the explosion of flammable gases which could be improved with ventilation of the workings. Sadly, such disasters continued to plague the industry for decades, until legislation was passed requiring the inspection of the collieries and various health and safety regulations were introduced. This work also examines the various new safety lamps, the use of which considerably lessened the likelihood of explosions in the workings. Scarce.
