FIRST EDITION. Quarto, pp 160, 32 catalogue. Frontispiece of Sir Hiram S Maxim and his Machine numerous illustrations in text of which 6 full-page. Original red decorative cloth blocked in gold, blue,black and white, with aeronautical motifs to spine and upper board, gilt titles to upper board and publishers’ monogram stamped in black to lower board. Spine very lightly sunned and boards a little soiled to edge; lower corners bumped. Contents lightly toned as usual, with ownership inscription in red ink to ffep, dated 1908. Overall a Very Good copy.
 
Preface by Hiram Stevens Maxim (1840-1916), the American born inventor who experimented with powered flight. Published on the cusp of viable aeroplane design, this volume focuses on dirigibles, airships and ballooning; it ends “to the heavier than air machine, using aero-planes on the Maxim principle or some other invention, we must look for the final solution of the problem of aerial navigation”. Scarce.
