Half-title, engraved frontispiece of Durham Cathedral interior showing the East window and the position of Bede and St Cuthbert’s tombs; 2 engraved plates of the tombs themselves and engraved gatefold map of England at the time of Bede. Full calf: original Cambridge style boards with blind ruling and decoration; later spine with 5 raised bands, blind ruling and gilt-stamped tan leather title label. Boards surface scuffed with wear to corners; unobtrusive damp stain to upper edge of textblock and to endpapers with associated minor rippling to leaves. From the library of Robert Wynne of Garthwin with his bookplate to front pastedown and his name inscribed to title page; stamp of the Royal Historical Society to ffep. A good early 18th century copy of Bede’s famous history. Completed by Bede in 731 AD the book is one of the principle sources of Anglo-Saxon history and the earliest attempt at a comprehensive history of England. ESTC T138994.
