FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp vii, [1], 272. 12 numbered plates as called for, plus 14 woodcuts in text. Original reeded brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt titles & motif to upper board, and greek key border in blind to boards; bound by Westleys and Clark. Joints split and upper board/ffep partially detached. Small loss to head of spine and minor loss at tail; boards creased & lightly soiled and corners bumped. Armorial bookplate of the Bishop of Guiana to front pastedown; binders’ ticket to rear pastedown. Several gatherings weak. Scattered toning, offsetting and foxing and a little underlining in pencil. A Fair copy.
 
Scarce. Wathen (1816-79) was a British architect and geologist and later a politician in South Africa; today he is best -known for his work on Egyptian antiquities and this volume includes his observations on the pyramids, sculpture and painitng.
