Quarto, pp xiv, [2], 318. Frontispiece by G J Pinwell plus 96 engravings in text by various named artists including Pinwell, T Dalziel, J W North, J Wolf and A B Houghton and engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. Publisher’s trade binding in ornate midnight blue cloth with bevelled boards blocked in gold and black and recessed elongated quatrefoil-shaped white paper onlay with gilt titles to each board; decorative titles in gilt and black to spine. Aeg. Spine very lightly sunned, and rubbed to tips with a couple of minor small nicks at head. Scattered light foxing, heavier to free endpapers. Overall Very Good copy.
Neither spine nor covers is signed; of the British Museum de Beaumont copy, King states that De Beaumont inscribed to upper endpaper verso: ”According [to] an ink note by Ruari [McLean] in my copy of Victorian Book Binding, the binding design is by Albert Warren from Longman’s list”. Poems by Lincolnshire poet and novelist and friend of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Jean Ingelow (1820-1897), whose works were highly successful in her lifetime on both sides of the Atlantic.
