FIRST EDITIONS. Volumes I and II only (of 3). Octavo, pp viii, 533, [1], 23 (re Anthropological Society rules and members) and x, 462, [2] errata, 32 (list of Fellows etc), 4 (Society rules). 6 plates and 4 folding tables to Vol I and 6 plates to Vol II as called for. Original brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and blindstamped borders to boards; t.e.g. Edges rubbed and corners bruised with nicks to spine tips Vol I and wear at head of spine Vol II with associated 1-inch split to upper joint of upper board. Inner hinge cracked and several leaves roughly opened Vol II with associated loss to edge and protruding tags facing. A little marginal annotation in pencil to Vol I; no inscriptions. Overall condition: Good.
 
Essays by various eminent contributors including Society President James Hunt on Scottish Islands and on the effect of peat upon human remains, John Beddoe on anthropology types and head forms and Vice President Richard F Burton on “an Hermaphrodite” and on the Dahoman people.
