FIRST EDITION. Quarto. [2], xvi, 494 pp. Double-page chromolithograph frontispiece with tissue guard, taken from 6 crayon sketches made on November 26th 1883 by Mr W Ashcroft of Chelsea depicting the changing colour of the sky in London at sunset. 443 numbered plates of which 21 fold-out, plus figures in text. Original maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine and blind borders and decoration to boards. Primrose yellow endpapers. Spine and part of upper board heavily sunned. Bumped to upper corners with associated minor creasing to textblock; edges rubbed. Upper joints starting and two splits to lower joint, one approx 1-inch and the other very minor. A little scattered foxing and toning.
Report of the Krakatoa Committee of the Royal Society, recording the many effects of the violet eruption which peaked on 27th August 1883, killing more than 36,000 people and destroying most of the island and its archipelago. Seismic activity was reported for several months in one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. Subsequent temperatures fell, weather patterns remained unsettled for several years with abnormally high rainfall in America, high winds, acid rain and spectacular sunsets as depicted in the frontispiece. This was naturally of great interest to the Royal Society and a Committee was formed to study the phenomenon and record the many reports received by them - this comprehensive work is the fruit of their labour. Scarce, especially so in the original publishers cloth.
