Pioneering work on openings for educated women in the British colonies, from first hand experience of hardened traveller Sykes who took a series of temporary appointments in households in Western Canada to test available opportunities. Sykes (1863-1939) was from a well-to-do background and had no need for employment herself - and indeed her portrait would suggest attendance at garden parties rather than waiting upon others- and was an early student at Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford.
