Large octavo. xxii,[2], 513,[1] colophon, [2] advertisement. 6 plates including frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bates, 32 illustrations in text, 2 maps of which 1 fold-out, and 3 fold-out pedigrees plus numerous pedigrees in text. Book Condition: Good. Publisher’s brown cloth with gilt titles to spine, gilt ruling and gilt Shorthorn bull motif to upper board. Black endpapers. Cloth rubbed to edge and bruised to corners with 1/2 inch nick at head of spine. Faint white marks to spine and top of upper board (possible paint spatter). Ownership inscription in pencil to half-title; no annotation. Minor foxing to prelims and endpapers otherwise a clean tight copy. Clippings relating to rare breeds of cattle loosely inserted.
 
A history of Shorthorn breeding and development from earliest times, focusing on the nineteenth century contribution made by the Author’s ancestor in County Durham and based upon his papers and correspondence. Scarce.
