Frontispiece portrait engraving, engraved plate of Sutherland Monument on Ben Bhraggie plus vignettes of the three monuments in the Duke's memory in text; decorative border with foliate corners to leaves. Book Condition: Near Fine. Later quarter morocco with two raised bands and gilt titles to spine; marbled paper-covered boards with original buff cloth label, with gilt titles inside gilt-stamped foliate border, laid-on to upper board. A little pale marking from polish to leather otherwise binding near-fine; light foxing to frontispiece and minor toning otherwise contents clean and bright. No annotation or inscriptions. Biography of George Granville Leveson-Gower, Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833) , notorious for the Highland Clearances carried out in his name by the Author (the Duke's agent) when the local crofters were unwillingly relocated to coastal areas to make way for more profitable sheep. The Duke was one of the richest men in Great Britain with extensive landholdings in Staffordshire and other areas of England as well as Sutherland. Subject matter covers the genealogy of the family as well as the life of the Duke and includes a detailed report on his funeral, the Address of Condolence presented to the new Duke, and lists of the subscribers to each of the monuments erected in the Duke's memory. Rare.
