Profusely illustrated throughout including frontispiece engraving to Vol I and numerous pieces of musical notation. Book Condition: Very Good. Brown calf with lighter brown cloth boards; five raised bands with contrasting brown calf title label. Gilt titles and decoration ; teg. Expertly rebacked retaining original boards, new endpapers; edges rubbed with some minor wear to corners. Ex-lib copy with shelf numbers and address stamp to spines in gilt and ink stamps to leaves and lower edges; some marginal annotation and underlining in pencil and extensive pencil annotation to verso pp 465 Volume I. Ownership inscription in ink to each rear pastedown dated 1960; a little sporadic light foxing. A handsome set of this important eighteenth century history which "contains valuable information about early 18th century musical society in London" (Grove). Hawkins (1719-89) was a respected scholar of the period and sometime friend of Samuel Johnson. Heavy, shipping outside the UK may require a contribution towards additional postage costs.
