Spine lightly sunned with small chip to head; front joint starting. Gilt dull. A little foxing to endpapers otherwise contents clean and bright. Good Cookery was the only Welsh cookery book written in the English language at this time and the tried and tested simple recipes served by Lady Llanover's personally-trained staff at Llanover House near Abergavenny form the basis of the book. Throughout her long life, Lady Llanover (1802-96) was well-known for her enthusiasm for the Welsh language, culture, literature and costume, as well as her famous hospitality and teetotal lifestyle (she closed all the pubs in Llanover and turned them into teashops!). The text is narrative in style and interspersed with insights into local history and the many interests of the Author, which included animal welfare (pp 314-5 tackles the "Evils of Artificial Fattening of Cattle") and the use of locally sourced ingredients which surprisingly included pumpkins grown in Gower. Scarce- Copac locates only 1 copy.
