Re-issue of the 1867 First Edition; pp., [i-iii], 4-8; [40]. Both editions are rare. Complete with additional lithographed title page and 21 tissue-guarded mounted plates as called for, superbly chromo-lithographed by J H Lowes with views of the Swiss Bernese Oberland in the Western Alps; each of the 21 colour lithographs corresponds with an individual chapter. Rebound in red half morocco with gilt titles to upper board and gilt line decoration; aeg. Minor damp stains to margins of title page and some mount margins. A student of the Royal Academy this is Walton’s best remembered work and is much sought after for his accurate and atmospheric rendering of mountain scenery. A mountaineering classic. Rare. £3000.00
