Modern full brown calf with five raised bands, maroon and black leather labels, gilt titles and decoration to spine and blind ruling to boards. New endpapers. Signature of the Author loosely inserted. Minor scuffing to boards; a little scattered foxing, mainly to prelims. Stamp of South Shields Master Mariners' Asylum to title page, map and final leaf; no annotation or inscriptions.
 
First edition of this early work on Arctic voyages and exploration, from the time of the Vikings up to publication. Scarce.
